In the beginning, do two paper glues join together? one red with one yellow.
Then they make four, placing the colors opposite: red-yellow, yellow-red. Next,
make the four paper glues eight and the eight sixteen. At this point, the
"buttons", the canopy of the balloon, must be made, that is, with very, very
great care. Mr. Vangelis and the school children take a pair of colorful paper
glues and fold the two ends triangularly, as in the figure, to make the "button".
These crumpled edges will be cut with a knife and then glued with fish glue. In
the past, Barba-Vangelis remembers, they used to glue the glues with flour
glue, a thin dough, that is, like the one they make bread. But the warehouse
mice, who were quite hungry, often did not leave any balloons for the
Resurrection. "The top of the button," insists the grandfather, "must be
narrow so that the balloon can leave more easily." The balloon, children, is
based on the principle of AERODYNAMICS. (Page manufacturer's note: he
probably wants to say the beginning of RISE) The warm air, which is lighter
than the atmospheric one, has the property of occupying the highest layers of
the atmosphere. The total weight of the device, therefore, is neutralized by the
buoyancy force of the Hot air, which has now filled the bag. In the end, Barba -
Vangelis seems satisfied with his canopy, as do the children with theirs.
Everything is now ready for the rod to be sewn, at the bottom of the balloon.
The reeds are located on the beach of Plaka and Mr. Vangelis explains to us
how much patience is needed to clean well and thin as much as needed to be
light and flexible. Another secret of a good balloon is hidden in the rod,
children. The grandfather measures it very carefully and then places the
balloon on the reed hoop and supports it with the "pegs" - pegs. This will be
followed, with the help of the grandson, by sewing the balloon around the rod.
- Grandpa, will you make me throw that little one away now? "In the
Resurrection, do not rush. "Now let us cross the wire and support it on the rod
to hang the colimara". The children at the City Hall made their "colimara" from
sails, preferably cotton. However, Mr. Vangelis insists: "When we say cloth, we
mean cotton cloth"! Then they cut the sails into strips and hang them on a
hook and this one is hung in turn at the bottom of the balloon, on the wire
cross. "Shortly before the priest sings CHRIST IS RISEN", the barba - Vangelis
tells us, "we will dip the colima in the oil, the invisible - fire will be lit - and as
soon as the balloon warms up, while the joyful message of the Resurrection
will be heard, "Five hundred balloons will fly to the mountains." But beware!
The inside of the balloon must be clean. Do not protrude papers from the
joints, because then it will catch fire and burn. - Saint Catherine is never
burned, his grandson shouts with twinkling eyes. His grandfather smiles,
because he knows that in all parishes sometimes some balloons burn. No one
can tell us, children, how the custom of the balloon arrived in Leonidio a
hundred years ago, as they say. Others inform us that it came from the far
West, others that it came from Kalamata and others that it was brought by the
inhabitants of a neighboring village. What is certain, however, is that the
Leonidians love their custom and maintain it to this day, illuminating the sky
with hundreds of colorful lanterns, which as they go up and away, become
smaller and smaller, smaller ... so small, that in Finally, they look like the
lanterns you children hold.
